    Chapter 37 - establishment of different lordships
vaishampAyana uvAcha
trayAnAmapi lokAnAmAdityAnAM cha bhArata |
chakAra shakraM rAjAnamAdityasamatejasam ||3-37-1
vaishampAyana said:
O the one of bharata race! (O janamejaya!) The lord made shakra, the one with splendor equal to the sun, the king of the three worlds as well as of the Aditya-s.
sa vajrI kavachI viShNuradityAmabhijaj~nivAn |
smR^iteH sahAyo dyutimAnyathA so.adhvaryubhiH stutaH ||3-37-2
viShNu, the one who has vajra as his weapon, the one who wears a shield, was born to aditi. Having the splendor accompanied by the traditional knowledge, he is praised by the officiating priests of the sacrifice (adhvaryu).
jAtamAtro.atha bhagavAntsa kushairbrAhmaNairdhR^itaH |
tadAprabhR^iti deveshaH kaushikatvamupAgataH ||3-37-3
As he was born, the lord was supported with kusha grass by the brAhmins. From that time, the lord of gods attained the state of being kaushika.
abhiShichyAdhirAjye tu sahasrAkShaM puraMdaram |
brahmA krameNa rAjyAni vyAdeShTumupachakrame ||3-37-4
After anointing the one with thousand eyes (indra), the destroyer of cities, as the king, the lord brahma started to allocate the states in order.
yaj~nAnAM tapasAM chaiva grahanakShatrayostathA |
dvijAnAmauShadhInAM tu somaM rAjye.abhyaShechayat ||3-37-5
The lord anointed soma (moon) as the king of sacrifices, penances, planets, stars as well as the twice-borns and medicines.
dakShaM prajApatInAM tu ambhasAM varuNaM patim |
pitR^INAM sarvanidhanaM kAlaM vaishvAnaraM prabhum ||3-37-6
dakSha was made the king of the lords of beings, varuNa was made the king of all aquatic beings. Lord vaishvAnara, the one who destroys all, the one who is splendorous as fire, was made the king of forefathers.
gandhAnAM chaiva sarveShAM bhUtAnAM cha sharIriNAm |
shabdAkAshabalAnAM cha vAyurIshastadA kR^itaH ||3-37-7
vAyu was made as the lord of all fragrance, all beings having bodies, sound, sky and strength.
sarvabhUtapishAchAnAM mR^ityUnAM cha gavAM tathA |
utpAtagraharogANAM vyAdhInAM tu tathaiva cha ||3-37-8
vratAnAM chaiva sarveShAM mahAdevaH kR^itaH prabhuH |
The great among deva-s, shiva was made the lord of all beings, flesh eating demons, death, cows, all calamities, planets, diseases and ailments and all types of penances.
yakShANAM rAkShasAnAM cha guhyakAnAM dhanasya cha ||3-37-9
ratnAnAM chaiva sarveShAM kR^ito vaishravaNaH prabhuH |
vaishravaNa (son of vishravas) was made the lord of yakSha-s, rAkShasa-s, guhyaka-s, wealth and all types of jewels.
sarveShAM daMShTriNAM sheSho nAgAnAmatha vasukiH ||3-37-10
sarIsR^ipANAM sarveShAM prabhurvai takShakaH kR^itaH |
sheSha was made the king of all those having great fangs. vAsuki was made the king of all serpents. takShaka was made the king of all creeping animals .
sAgarANAM nadInAM cha meghAnAM varShaNasya cha |
AdityAnAmavarajaH parjanyo.adhipatiH kR^itaH ||3-37-11
parjanya, the youngest of Aditya-s was made the lord of oceans, rivers, clouds as well as the rain.
gandharvANAmadhipatistathA chitrarathaH kR^itaH |
sarvApsarogaNAnAM cha kAmadevaH prabhuH kR^itaH ||3-37-12
chitraratha was made the lord of gandharva-s. Lord kAmadeva was made the lord of all groups of divine women.
chatuShpadAnAM sarveShAM vAhanAnAM cha sarvashaH |
maheshvaradhvajaH shrImAngovR^iSho.adhipatiH kR^itaH ||3-37-13
The auspicious nandi who serves as the flag of the great deva, shiva was made the lord of all four legged beings as also all vehicles.
daityAnAM cha mahAtejA hiraNyAkShaH prabhuH kR^itaH |
hiraNyakashipushchaiva yauvarAjye.abhiShechitaH ||3-37-14
The one with great splendor, hiraNyAkSha was made the lord of demons. hiraNyakashipu was anointed as the hair-apparent.
gaNAnAM kAlakeyAnAM mahAkAlaH prabhuH kR^itaH |
anAyuShAyAH putrANAM vR^itro rAjA tadA kR^itaH ||3-37-15
mahAkAla was anointed as the lord of all bhUtagaNAs and kAlakeya-s. vR^itra was made the king of the sons of anAyuShA.
siMhikAtanayo yastu rAhurnAma mahAsuraH |
utpAtAnAmanekAnAmashubhAnAM prabhuH kR^itaH ||3-37-16
The son of siMhikA, named rAhu, the great demon was made the lord of all types of calamities and inauspicious portents.
R^itUnAmatha sarveShAM yugAnAM chaiva bhArata |
pakShANAM chaiva mAsAnAM tathaiva tithiparvANAm ||3-37-17
kalAkAShThAmuhUrtAnAM gaterayanayostathA |
kR^itaH saMvatsaro rAjA yogasya gaNitasya cha ||3-37-18
O the one of the bharata race! ( O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) saMvatsara was made the lord of all seasons, yuga-s, fifteen lunar days, months, lunar days, periods, time, moment and the north and south bound paths of the sun as also the lord of yoga and computation.
pAkShiNAM chaiva sarveShAM chakShuShAM cha mahAbalaH |
suparNo bhoginAM chaiva garuDo.adhipatiH kR^itaH ||3-37-19
The highly powerful garuDa, the one with beautiful wings, was made the lord of all birds, all those who can see far away, as well as serpents.
aruNo garuDabhrAtA japApuShpachayaprabhaH |
yogAnAM chaiva sarveShAM sAdhyAnAmadhipaH kR^itaH ||3-37-20
aruNa, the brother of garuDa, splendorous as the red flowers used during prayers was made the king of all yoga-s as well as sAdhya-s.
putro.asya viratho nama kashyapasya prajApateH |
rAjA prAchyAM dishi tathA vAsavenAdhipaH kR^itaH ||3-37-21
The son of the lord of beings kashyapa, named viratha was made the king of the eastern direction by vAsava (indra).
Adityasya vibhoH putro dharmarAjo mahAyashAH |
dakShiNasyAM dishi yamo mahendreNaiva satkR^itaH ||3-37-22
The son of lord Aditya (sun), the lord dhramarAja, yama, having great fame, was made the king of southern direction and he was felicitated by the great indra.
kashyapasyaurasaH putra salilAntargataH sadA |
amburAjya iti khyAtaH pratIchyAM dishi pArthivaH ||3-37-23
kashyapa's legitimate son, varuNa, who always stays under water and known as the king of water was made the king of the western direction.
pulastyaputro dyutimAnmahendrapratimaH prabhuH |
ekAkShaH pi~Ngalo nAma saumyAyAM dishi pArthivaH ||3-37-24
The son of pulastya, the lord named pi~Ngala, splendorous as the great indra and having one eye, was made the king of the northern direction.
evaM vibhajya rAjyAni svayaMbhUrlokabhAvanaH |
lokAMshcha tridive divyAnadadatsa pR^ithakpR^ithak ||3-37-25
Dividing the world in this way, the lord who was born by himself, the lord who desires the welfare of all beings, allocated divine worlds for those kings in heaven.
kasyachitsUryasaMkAshAnkasyachidvahnisannibhAn |
kasyachitsuShThu vidyotAnkasyachichchandranirmalAn ||3-37-26
Some were given splendorous worlds similar to that of the sun. Some were given worlds similar to that of fire. Some were given worlds shining like lightning. Some were given worlds without any impurity like the moon.
nAnAvarNAnkAmagamAnanekashatasho janAn |
sa tAnsukR^itinAM lokAnpApaduShkR^itidurlabhAn ||3-37-27
These worlds were having variety of colours. These could move anywhere as they wished. Many were residing in these worlds, who performed auspicious deeds. Those doing sinful deeds were rare (in these worlds).
yeShAM bhAso vibhAntyagre saumyAstArAgaNA iva |
ete sukR^itinAM lokA ye jAtAH puNyakarmiNaH ||3-37-28
These worlds which are seen shining as group of stars are the worlds of those who perform good deeds. These worlds were created for those who perform auspicious deeds.
ye yajanti makhaiH puNyaiH samAptavaradakShiNaiH |
svadAraniratAH shAntA R^ijavaH satyavAdinaH ||3-37-29
dInAnugrahakartAro brahmaNyA lobhavarjitAH |
saMtyaktarajasaH santo yAnti tatra tapo.amalAH ||3-37-30
Those who perform auspicious sacrifices giving tributes in the end, always loving their wives, calm, straightforward, truthful, helping those who suffer, those who worship brAhmins, greed-less, those who abandon the rAjasa qualities, those are pure with penances go to these worlds.
evaM niyujya tanayAntsvayaM lokapitAmahaH |
puShkaraM brahmasadanamAruroha prajApatiH ||3-37-31
The lord brahma, the lord of beings, the grandfather of the world, assigning his sons in this manner, went to the house of brahma, puShkara.
sarve svayaMbhudatteShu pAlaneShu divaukasaH |
remire sveShu lokeShu mahendreNAbhipAlitAH ||3-37-32
All the deva-s, protecting the worlds given by the one who was born by himself, protected by the great indra, enjoyed, living in their own worlds.
    svayaMbhuvA shakrapuraHsarAH surAH
        kR^itA yathArhaM pratipAlaneShu te |
    yasho divaM cha pratipedire shubhaM
        mudaM cha jagmurmakhabhAgabhojinaH ||3-37-33
All the deva-s, beginning with shakra, taking their portions in the sacrifices, on being assigned by brahma for protecting the worlds as required, became pleased. Performing their duties, they obtained auspicious fame as well as the heaven.

Thus this is the thirty-seventh chapter of bhaviShyaparva, harivaMsha, khila of mahAbhArata, establishment of different lordships
