    Chapter 40 deva-s freed and their commands restored
vaishampAyana uvAcha
vidrAvya tu raNe sarvAnasurAnpuruShottamaH |
mumocha tatra baddhAMstAnpuraMdaramukhAnsurAn ||3-40-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) After making all the asura-s run away from the battle, the best among men, (viShNu in the form of varAha) released the deva-s including the destroyer of strongholds (indra).
tataH prakR^itimApannAH sarve devagaNAstathA |
puraMdaraM puraskR^itya nArAyaNamupasthitAH ||3-40-2
Then all the groups of deva-s, led by the destroyer of strongholds (indra) who regained their original state, stood in the service of narAyaNa.
devA UchuH
tvatprasAdena bhagavaMstava bAhubalena cha |
jivamo.adya mahAbAho niShkrAntAshchAntakAnanAt ||3-40-3
deva-s said:
O lord! O the one with powerful arms! We live due to your pleasure, and also due to the power of your arms. Now we are rescued from the mouth of the god of death.
tvachChAsanAddhi bhagavankiM kurvantyaditeH sutAH |
ichChAmaH pAdashushrUShAM tava kartuM sanAtana ||3-40-4
O lord! What shall we, the sons of diti, do according to your order? O the eternal one! We wish to serve your feet (you).
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tachChrutvA vachanaM teShAM puNDarIkanibhekShaNaH |
uvAcha vachanaM devAnmudA yukto hatadviShaH ||3-40-5
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by the deva-s, the one with eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower (viShNu), spoke the following words happily to deva-s, whose enemy was killed.

yo yasya bhavato loko mayaiva vihitaH purA |
pAlyatAM sa tu yaj~nena niyogashcha kvachitkvachit ||3-40-6
The auspicious lord (varAha - viShNu) said:
Make efforts to follow my directions by protecting the worlds, whichever I have allocated to you before.
aishvaryaM pratipannaH svaM kratubhAgapuraskR^itam |
mayaiva pUrvaM nirdiShTo niyogaH pratipAlyatAm ||3-40-7
You have already obtained the prosperity presented by (partaking) the portions of sacrifice. Obey the directions given to you by me before.
shakraM chovAcha bhagavAnvachanaM dundubhisvanaH |
idaM yathAvatkartavyaM satsu chAsatsu cha tvayA ||3-40-8
(vaishampAyana said: O janamejaya!)
The lord, having the loud sound of a kettle drum, spoke the following words to shakra (indra) also: You shall do your duty in the right way, appropriate for good men.
gachChantu tapasA svargaM munayaH shaMsitavratAH |
tava lokaM surashreShTha sarvakAmadughaM sadA |
The sages, those who observe vows , shall go to heaven (your world), which always fulfills all desires, O the best among deva-s (indra)! due to their penances.
yAyajUkAshcha ye kechidbrAhmaNAH kShatriyA vishaH ||3-40-9
teShAM kAmadughA lokAH svargamAdimanoharAH |
Whichever brAhmaNa, kShatriya or vaishya who performs sacrifices will attain wonderful worlds such as heaven, which fulfill all their desires.
yaj~nairiShTvA yAyajUkAH phalaM te prApnuvantu cha ||3-40-10
Those who are keen on performing sacrifices, will do the same and obtain the results.
bhAvaH saddharmashIlAnAmabhAvaH pApakarmaNAm |
santaH svargajitaH santu sarvAshramanivAsinaH ||3-40-11
Those who are with good behavior will prosper and they will not do any sinful deeds. All those living in hermitages shall be victorious in heaven.
satyashUrA raNe shUrA dAnashUrAshcha ye narAH |
te narAH svargamashnantu sadA ye chAnasUyavaH ||3-40-12
Those who are valiant in truth, valiant in battle, valiant in charity, and those are not envious, they shall always attain heaven.
ashraddadhAnAH puruShAH kAmino.arthaparAH shaThAH |
abrahmaNyA nAstikAshcha narakaM yAntu mAnavAH ||3-40-13
Those who are not attentive, greedy, selfish and stubborn, harming the Brahmins and do not believe in god, shall go to hell.
etAvatkriyatAM vAkyaM mayoktaM tridasheshvarAH |
tato mayi sthite sarvAnbAdhiShyante na chArayaH ||3-40-14
O the lord of heaven (indra)! If you implement the words spoken by me, then as along as I am there, all of you shall not be affected by your enemies.
ityuktvAntarhito devaH sha~NkachakragadAdharaH |
devatAnAM cha sarveShAmabhavadvismayo mahAn ||3-40-15
Speaking thus, the lord, the one who holds the conch, chakra and mace disappeared. All the deva-s were struck by great wonder.
etadatyadbhutaM dR^iShTvA vArAhacharitaM surAH |
namaskR^itya varAhAya nAkapR^iShThamito gatAH ||3-40-16
Seeing this most wonderful adventure of (lord) varAha, the deva-s bowed to (lord) varAha (viShNu) and happily went to the backside (interiors) of heaven from there.
tataH svAnyAdhipatyAni pratipannAni daivataiH |
sarvalokAdhipatye cha pratiShThAM vAsavo gatAH ||3-40-17
Then the deva-s resumed their command of their regions and vAsava (indra) was installed as the lord of all the worlds.
vimuktA dAnavagaNaiH prakR^itiM dharaNI gatA |
The earth, released from the groups of demons, regained its natural position.
sthairyahetordharaNyAstu j~nAtvA chAgaskR^itAngirIn ||3-40-18
sveShu sthAneShu saMsthApya parvatAnAM puraMdaraH |
chichCheda bhagavAnpakShAnvajreNa shataparvaNA ||3-40-19
Knowing that the mountains are responsible for lack of firmness (immobility) of earth, the destroyer of strongholds (indra), the lord, after installing the mountains at their own places, cut off their wings with his weapon, the hundred jointed (edged) (shataparva) vajra.
sarveShAmeva pakShA vai ChinnAH shakreNa dhImatA |
ekaH sapakSho mainakaH suraistatsamayaH kR^itaH ||3-40-20
shakra (indra), having intellect, cut off the wings of all the mountains, except mainAka (the son of himavat by menA) who was left with wings as per the agreement with deva-s.
eSha nArAyaNasyAyaM prAdurbhAvo mahAtmanaH |
vArAha iti viprendraiH purANe parikIrtitaH ||3-40-21
This is the description of varAha manifestation of the great soul, nArAyaNa, as extolled by the indra (king) of brAhmins in ancient histories.
kR^iShNadvaipAyanamataM nAnAshrutisamAhitam |
nAshucherna kR^itaghnAya na nR^ishaMsAya kIrtayet ||3-40-22
This, along with the sacred knowledge heard from the beginning, as stated by kR^iShNadvaipAyana (vyAsa), should not be told to the one who are impure, ungrateful and cruel.
na kShudrAya na nIchAya na gurudveShakAriNe |
nAshiShyAya tathA rAjanna kR^itaghnAya chaiva hi ||3-40-23
O king! (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) This should not be told to the mean, low, those who hate the perceptor, those who are not students and also to those who are ungrateful.
AyuShkAmairyashaH kAmairmahIkAmaishcha mAnavaiH |
jayaiShibhishcha shrotavyo devAnAmeSha vai jayaH ||3-40-24
Those who desire long life, fame, land and those who desire victory shall listen to this victory of the deva-s.
purANavedasaMbaddhaH shivaH svastyayano mahan |
pAvanaH sarvasattvAnAM tatkAlavijayapradaH ||3-40-25
This account, concerning ancient history and vedas, is auspicious and will ensure a prosperous venture. This is sacred for all the beings and will ensure victory at that time.
eSha kauravya tattvena kathitastvanupUrvashaH |
vArAhasya nR^ipashreShTha prAdurbhAvo mahAtmanaH ||3-40-26
Thus, O the one of the race of kuru (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued), I have told you, in principle, sequentially, O the best among kings, (vaishampAyana continued) the manifestation of the great soul, varAha (viShNu).
ye yajanti makhaiH puNyairdaivatAni pitR^Inapi |
AtmAnamAtmanA nityaM viShNumeva jayanti te ||3-40-27
Those who perform holy sacrifices for deva-s and also for the forefathers are performing sacrifices for viShNu, the eternal soul of the soul.
lokAyanAya tridashAyanAya
brAhmAyanAyAtmabhavAyanAya |
nArAyaNAyAtmahitAyanAya
mahavarAhAya namaskuruShva ||3-40-28
O king! (janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Bow to the great varAha manifestation (of viShNu), the refuge of the world, the refuge of the deva-s, the refuge of brahman (vedas), the refuge of the self-born (brahma), the benificial soul of nArAyaNa.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi vArAhaprAdurbhAve chatvAriMsho.adhyAyaH
Thus this is the fourtieth chapter of bhavishyaparva, harivaMsha, khila of mahAbhArata, in the manifestation of the great boar, devas freed and their commands restored
