    Chapter 43 - asura-s surprised, but prahrAda recognises viShNu in narasimha
vaishampAyana uvAcha
tato dR^iShTvA mahAbAhuM kAlachakramivAgatam |
nArasiMhavapushChannaM bhasmAchChannamivAnalam ||3-43-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) The manifestation (of viShNu) covered by the body of man-lion with powerful arms, like the splendor of fire covered by ashes, was seen as reaching the assembly like the wheel of Time.
viku~nchitasaTaM tasya nArasiMhasya bhArata |
rUpaudAryaM babhau tatra sahasrashashisAnnibham ||3-43-2
O the one of bharata race! (janamejaya! vaishaMpAyana continued) The nobility of the form of man-lion with coiled mane, dazzled like thousand moons.
aho rUpamidaM chitraM sha~Nkhakundendusannibham |
abruvandAnavAH sarve hiraNyakashipushcha saH ||3-43-3
Alas! This is a strange form, having the colour of the conch, jasminum multiflorum and the moon - All the demons including hiraNyakashipu exclaimed.
evaM hi bruvatAM teShAM nirdagdhAnAM mahAtmanAm |
nArasiMhena chakShurbhyAM choditAH kAladharmaNA ||3-43-4
As those great souls who were scorched were saying thus, prompted by the man-lion by his eyes, according to the duty of the times,
hiraNyakashipoH putraH prahrAdo nAma vIryavAn |
divyena chakShuShA siMhamapashyaddevamAgatam ||3-43-5
the valiant son of hiraNyakashipu, named prahrAda, saw by divine eye that the lord has come in the form of man-lion.
taM dR^iShTva rukmashailAbhamapUrvaM tanumAsthitam |
vismitA dAnavAH sarve hiraNyakashipushcha saH ||3-43-6
Seeing the lord with splendor of golden mountain, taking a body, which was not taken before, all the demons including hiraNyakashipu wondered.
prahrAda uvAcha
mahArAja mahAbAho daityAnAmAdisaMbhava |
na shrutaM naiva dR^iShTaM cha nArasiMhamidaM vapuH ||3-43-7
prahrAda said:
O great king (hiraNyakashipu)! O the one with powerful arms! O the foremost of the demons! We have neither heard about nor seen before this body of man-lion.
avyaktaprabhavaM divyaM kimidaM rUpamadbhutam |
daityAntakaraNaM ghoraM shaMsatIva manAMsi naH ||3-43-8
This form has a divine splendor which is not clear. What is this wonderful form? Our minds say that this terrible form is for destroying the demons.
asya devAH sharIrasthAH sAgarAH saritastathA |
himavAnpAriyAtrashcha ye chAnye kulaparvatAH ||3-43-9
On his body, there are deva-s, oceans, rivers, the mountains himavAn and pAriyAtra and other noble mountains,
chandramAH saha nakShatrairAdityAshchAshvinau tathA |
dhanado varuNashchaiva yamaH shakraH shachIpatiH ||3-43-10
moon with stars, Aditya-s as well as the ashvin-s, dhanada (the god of wealth), varuNa, yama (the god of death) and shakra, the husband of shachI.
maruto devagandharvA munayashcha tapodhanAH |
nAgA yakShAH pishAchAshcha rAkShasA bhImavikramAH ||3-43-11
marut-s, devagandharva-s, sages with wealth of penance, serpents, yakSha-s, pishAcha-s and highly valiant rAkShasa-s.
brahmadevaH pashupatirlalATasthA vibhAnti vai |
sthAvarANi cha bhUtAni ja~NgamAni tathaiva cha ||3-43-12
The lord brahmA and the lord of beings (shiva) are shining on his forehead along with fixed and moving beings.
bhavAMshcha sahito.asmAbhiH sarvairdaityagaNairvR^itaH |
vimAnashatasa~NkIrNA tathAbhyantarajA sabhA ||3-43-13
You, along with all of us, surrounded by all the groups of demons, along with hundreds of aerial vehicles and this internal assembly,
sarvaM tribhuvanaM rAja.Nllokadharmashcha shAshvataH |
dR^ishyate nArasiMhe.asminyatendau vimalaM jagat ||3-43-14
O king! All the three worlds and the eternal world of dharma are seen in the man-lion, like the world is seen on the pure moon.
    prajApatishchAtra manurmahAtmA
        grahAshcha yogAshcha mahI nabhashcha |
    utpAtakAlashcha dhR^itiH smR^itishcha
        rajashcha sattvaM cha tapo damashcha ||3-43-15
The lord of beings, the great soul manu, the planets, all yogas, the earth and the sky, the meteors, satisfaction, the traditional knowledge, the qualities of passion and goodness, penance, self control,
    sanatkumArashcha mahAnubhAvo
        vishve cha devApsarasashcha sarvAH |
    krodhashcha kAmashcha tathaiva harSho
        darpashcha mohaH pitarashcha sarve ||3-43-16
the high minded sanatkumAra, the vishvadeva, all the divine women, anger, desire as well as happiness, arrogance, infatuation and all the fathers are seen in the man-lion.
    ityevamuktA sa cha daityarAjaM
        hiraNyanAmAnamavismayena |
    dadhyau cha daityeshvaraputra ugram
        mahAmatiH ki~nchidadhomukhaH prAk ||3-43-17
Speaking thus without any wonder to the demon king hiraNyakashipu, the son of the demon king, prahrAda, having high intelligence, keeping his face slightly down, started meditating in the direction of east.
