Chapter 47 - hiraNyakashipu killed and brahma's praise of
tatrAdityAshcha sAdhyAshcha vishve cha marutastathA |
rudrA devA mahAtmAno vasavashcha mahAbalAH ||3-47-1
(O janamejaya!) There the Aditya-s, sAdhya-s, the lords of the universe and
also the marut-s, the rudra-s, the deva-s, the great souls, the highly
Agamya te mR^igendrasya sakAshaM sUryavarchasaH |
UchuH saMtrastamanaso devA lokakShayArditAH ||3-47-2
all the deva-s, terrified and oppressed by the decline of the world, reached
near the indra (king) of animals (man- lion), having the splendor of the
sun and said:
jahi deva diteH putraM dAnavaM lokanAshanam |
durvR^ittamasadAchAraM saha sarvairmahAsuraiH ||3-47-3
O lord! Kill the demon, the son of diti, the destroyer of the world, the one
whose conduct is wrong and who does wrong things, along with all the great
tvaM hyeShAmantakR^innAnyo daityAnAM daityanAshana |
tannAshaya hitArthAya lokAnAM svasti vai kuru ||3-47-4
O the destroyer of demons! You are the destroyer of these demons. There is no
one else. Hence destroy them for the benefit and good of the beings of the
tvaM guruH sarvalokAnAM tvamindrastvaM pitAmahaH |
R^ite tvadanyachCharaNaM na bhUtaM na bhavishyati ||3-47-5
You are the preceptor of all the worlds. You are the indra and you are the
great grandfather. Truly, there is no refuge other than you in the present or
past and there will be no one in the future.
tachChrutvA vachanaM devo devAnAmAdisaMbhavaH |
nanAda sumahAnAdamatigambhIraniHsvanam ||3-47-6
(O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued) Hearing these words, the lord,
the one who was born among the gods in the beginning, roared with a deep
and great sound.
pATitAnyasurendrANAM mR^igendreNa mahAtmanA |
siMhanAdena mahatA hR^idayAni manAMsi cha ||3-47-7
That great soul, the indra (king) of animals, with the loud roar of lion made
the hearts and minds of those demon indra-s (kings) fall.
gaNaH krodhavasho nAma kAlakeyastathA paraH |
vegashcha vaigaleyashcha saimhikeyashcha vIryavAn ||3-47-8
The groups of demons named krodhavasha and another group of demons kAlakeya
and the demons vega, vaigaleya and the valiant demons saimhikeya,
saMhrAdIyo mahAnAdo mahAvegastathA paraH |
kapilashcha mahIputro vyAghrAkShaH kShitikampanaH ||3-47-9
the demons saMhrAdIya, mahAnAda, mahAvega, kapila, mahIputra, vyAghrAkSha,
khecharAshcha nishAputrAH pAtAlatalachAriNaH |
gaNastathAparo raudro meghanAdo.a~NkushAyudhaH ||3-47-10
the demons who travel through the sky, the sons of night, the demons who
move in the netherworld, the other groups of terrible demons, meghanAda,
Urdhvago bhImavegashcha bhImakarmArkalochanaH |
vajrI shUlI karAlashcha hiranyakashipustataH ||3-47-11
the demons Urdhvavega, bhImavega, bhImakarma, arkalochanaH, vajri, shUli,
karAla and also hiraNyakashipu himself,
jImUtaghanasa~NkAsho jImUta iva vegavAn |
jImUtaghanasaMnAdo jImUtasadR^ishadyutiH ||3-47-12
who had a form like a dense cloud, who was fast like a cloud, who roared like
a cloud, who was sparkling like a cloud,
dR^iptairdaityagaNaistuShTo mR^igendreNa mahAtmanA |
devArirditijo dR^ipto nR^isiMhaM samupAdravat ||3-47-13
the enemy of deva-s, the one born to diti, the proud demon,
hiraNyakashipu ran towards the man-lion and reached the great soul,
the indra (king) of animals, making the group of proud demons happy.
samutpatya tatastIkShNairmR^igendreNa mahAnakhaiH |
tatro~NkArasahAyena vidArya nihato yudhi ||3-47-14
The indra (king) of animals, jumping forward, killed hiraNyakashipu in the
battle by tearing (his body) with his great nails with the help of o~NkAra.
mahI cha lokashcha shashI nabhashcha
grahAshcha sUryashcha dishashcha sarvAH |
nadyashcha shailAshcha mahArNavAshcha
gatAH prakAshaM ditiputranAshAt ||3-47-15
With the destruction of the son of diti (hiraNyakashipu), the earth,
the world, moon, sky, planets, sun, all the directions, rivers, mountains as
well as the great oceans became lighted up.
tataH pramuditA devA R^iShayashcha tapodhanAH |
tuShTuvurvividhaiH stotrairAdidevaM sanAtanam ||3-47-16
Then the deva-s, sages having the wealth of penance became happy. They made
the eternal lord happy by praising him with many hymns.
yattvayA vihitaM deva nArasiMhamidaM vapuH |
etadevArchayiShyanti parAvaravido janAH |
O lord ! This body of man-lion, taken by you will be worshipped by the
wise people who know about the past and present (cause and effect).
mR^igendratvaM cha lokeShu sarvasattveShu vA vibho ||3-47-17
In all the worlds, the state of being the indra of animals (man-lion),
O lord! will be praised by all the beings.
gAyanti tvAM cha munayo mR^igendra iti nityashaH |
tvatprasAdAtsvakaM sthAnaM pratipannAH sma vai vibho ||3-47-18
The sages will always sing about you as the man-lion, the indra (king) of
animals. O lord! With your pleasure we have regained our own places.
evamukto devasa~NghairnarasiMho mahAmanAH |
brahmA cha paramaprIto viShNoH stotramudairayat ||3-47-19
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) The man-lion, who was praised thus
by the groups of deva-s was highly pleased. brahma became highly pleased and
pronounced a hymn of viShNu.
bhavAnakSharamavyaktamachintyaM guhyamuttamam |
kUTasthamakR^itaM kartR^i sanAtanamanAmayam ||3-47-20
O lord ! you are without decline, you are un-manifested, you can not be
imagined, you are mysterious and the best, you are the highest,
unchangeable, you have no creator, you are the creator, you are the eternal.
You are not pernicious.
sA~Nkhyayoge cha yA buddhistattvArthapariniShThitA |
tAM bhavAndeva vidyAtmA puruShaH shAshvato dhruvaH ||3-47-21
You are the puruSha, eternal and fixed. You are the knowledgeable soul who
knows about the intellect fixed in the sA~Nkhyayoga installed in the meaning
tvaM vyaktashcha tathAvyaktastvattaH sarvamidaM jagat |
bhavanmayA vayaM deva bhavAnAtmA bhavAnprabhuH ||3-47-22
You are the manifested as well as the unmanifested. You are this entire universe.
O lord! We are you. You are the soul and you are the lord.
chaturvibhaktamUrtistvaM sarvalokavibhurguruH |
chaturyugasahasreNa sarvalokAntakAntakaH ||3-47-23
You are with a body, divided in four parts. You are the lord and preceptor
of all the words. With thousands of four eras, you are the destroyer of the
destroyer of all worlds.
[ chaturdevashchaturhotrashchaturAtmA sanAtanaH ]
You are the four deva-s, you are the four hotra-s, you are the four souls
and you are the eternal.
pratiShThA sarvabhUtAnAmanantabalapauruShaH |
kapilaprabhR^itInAM cha yatInAM paramA gatiH ||3-47-24
You are the refuge of all beings. You are with unending strength and power.
You are the ultimate destination of the sages such as kapila.
anAdimadhyanidhanaH sarvAtmA puruShottamaH |
sraShTA tvaM tvaM cha saMhartA tvameko lokabhAvanaH ||3-47-25
You are the one who do not have beginning, middle and the end. You are the
soul of all (in the universe). You are the best among men. You are the creator,
you are the destroyer. You are the only one who is concerned with the welfare
bhavAnbrahmA cha rudrashcha mahendro varuNo yamaH |
bhavAnkartA vikartA cha lokAnAM prabhuravyayaH ||3-47-26
You are brahma and also rudra, the great indra, varuNa and yama.
You are the doer, the un-doer, also the lord of the world who does not have
parAM cha siddhiM paramaM cha devaM
paraM cha mantraM paramaM manashcha |
paraM cha dharmaM paramaM yashashcha
tvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-27
You are the highest skill, the most superior deva, the superior mantra and
also the superior mind, the highest dharma, the highest fame and you are the
foremost person, the puruSha, celebrated in the purANa-s.
paraM cha satyaM paramaM havishcha
paraM pavitraM paramaM cha mArgam |
paraM cha hotraM paramaM cha yaj~naM
tvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-28
You are the highest truth, highest oblation, highest and most holy way,
highest oblation to the fire and the highest sacrifice and you are the
foremost person, the puruSha celebrated in the purANa-s.
paraM sharIraM paramaM cha dhAma
paraM cha yogaM paramAM cha vANIm |
paraM rahasyaM paramAM gatiM cha
tvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-29
You are the superior body, foremost residence, foremost yoga and highest
speech, highest secret and foremost destination and you are the foremost
person, the puruSha celebrated in the purANa-s.
paraM parasyApi paraM cha yatparaM
paraM parasyApi paraM cha devam |
paraM parasyApi paraM prabhuM cha
tvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-30
You are the highest of the foremost, you are the highest of the deva-s,
highest of the lords and you are the foremost person, the puruSha celebrated
in the purANa-s.
paraM parasyApi paraM pradhAnaM
paraM parasyApi paraM cha tattvaM |
paraM parasyApi paraM cha dhAtA
tvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-31
You are the most important of the highest, you are the highest of the
principles, you are the highest of the creators and you are the foremost
person, the puruSha celebrated in the purANa-s.
paraM parasyApi paraM rahasyaM
param parasyApi paraM paraM yat |
paraM parasyApi paraM tapo ya-
ttvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-32
You are the highest of the secrets, you are the highest of the highest,
you are the highest penance and you are the foremost person, the puruSha
celebrated in the purANa-s.
paraM parasyApi paraM parAyaNaM
paraM cha guhyaM cha paraM cha dhAma |
paraM cha yogaM paramaM prabhutvaM
tvAmAhuragryaM puruShaM purANam ||3-47-33
You are the highest of all refuges, highest of the residences, highest
lordships and you are the foremost person, the puruSha celebrated in
evamuktvA sa bhagavAnsarvalokapitAmahaH |
stutvA nArAyaNaM devaM brahmalokaM gataH prabhuH ||3-47-34
(O janamejaya!) The lord (narasiMha) was praised thus by the grandfather of
all the worlds. Praising the lord nArAyaNa (viShNu), lord brahma went to
the world of brahma.
tato nadatsu tUryeShu nR^ityantIShvapsaraHsu cha |
kShIrodasyottaraM kUlaM jagAma prabhurIshvaraH ||3-47-35
As the musical instruments played and as the divine women danced, the lord,
the God (the man-lion, viShNu) went to the northern bank of the milky ocean.
nArasiMhIM tanuM tyaktvA sthApayitvA cha tadvapuH |
paurANaM rUpamAsthAya yayau sa garuDadhvajaH ||3-47-36
Leaving the body of the man-lion and installing the body (at the proper place)
taking his original form, the lord having garuDa on his flag went away.
aShTachakreNa yAnena bhUtiyuktena shobhinA |
avyaktaH prakR^itirdevaH saMsthAnamagamatprabhuH ||3-47-37
The Lord, the one who is not manifested, the Lord of the nature went to his
place in the carriage having eight wheels which sparkle due to splendor.

evaM mahAtmanA tena nR^isiMhavapuShA tadA |
devena nihataH pUrvaM hiraNyakashipushcha saH ||3-47-38
In this manner, (the demon) hiraNyakashipu was killed by the great soul,
the Lord, taking up the body of man-lion, long ago.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe bhaviShyaparvaNi
This is the fourtyseventh chapter of bhaviShyaparva, harivaMsha,
