O the best among the victorious! (O janamejaya!) There is a most wonderful hymn Ahnika, recited by baladeva (balarAma) for protection, on the arrival of pradyumna in the city of dvAraka after slaying kAlashambara.
yajjaptvA tu nR^ipashreShTha sAyaM pUtAtmatAM vrajet ||2-109-2
If recited in the evening, O the best among kings, (O janamejaya! vaishampAyana continued), this hymn is capable of purifying souls.

This hymn is recited by baladeva (balarAma) as well as by viShNu. This hymn is also recited by the sages who desire dharma.

and those who are powerful, firm and devoted to brAhmaNa-s, those who are bound by truth, those who completely destroy all the desires of enemies in battle,
rAtrAvahani durgeShu kIrtitAH sakalairguNaiH |
teShAM gaNAnAM patayaH sagaNAH pAntu mAM sadA ||2-109-84
all of them, when they are praised during day or night during difficult times, shall protect me always along with the lord of gaNa (gaNesha) accompanied by the gaNa.

goddess earth, fried and opened grain, brahmins, honey, sweet dish, swastika, vardhamAna, nandyAvarta, priya~Ngava (priya~Ngu - Aglaia Odorata or Sinapis Ramosa), shrIphala (Aegle Marmelos), gobar, fish, the sounds of kettle drum (dundhubhi) and war drum (paTaha)

rochanA ruchakashchaiva nadInAM sa~Ngamodakam ||2-109-100
the wives of the sages, maidens, auspicious seats, bows, rochana (gorochana), ruchaka and also the water of the confluence of rivers,
suparNAH shatapatrAshcha chakorA jIvajIvakAH |
nandImukho mayUrashcha baddhamuktAmaNidhvajAH ||2-109-101
suparNa, shatapatra (lotus), chakora (Perdix rufe), jIvajIvaka, nandImukha (a kind of waterbird), peacock and flagstaffs on which pearls gems are tied,
AyudhAni prashastAni kAryasiddhikarANi cha |
puNyaM vai vigatakleshaM shrImadvai ma~NgalAnvitam ||2-109-102
the weapons, famous for accomplishing the tasks and all those providing good fortune and those destroy the difficulties, along with good results shall protect me.

This was recited by balarAma long ago. Those men who desire long life, prosperity and victory, get it recited by wise men and hear it.

vadhabandhaparikleshaM vyAdhishokaparAbhavam ||2-109-104
if one chants this hymn along with one hundred and eight auspicious names, after taking bath during the days of the changes of the moon, they will not be affected by the sufferings of death and attachment, disease and sorrow.
na cha prApnoti vaikalyaM paratreha cha sharmadam |
dhanyaM yashasyamAyuShyaM pavitraM vedasaMmitam ||2-109-105
This hymn is good for this world and for the other world. This holy hymn equal to the veda-s will provide fortune, fame and long life.
shrImatsvargyaM sadA puNyamapatyajananaM shivam |
shubhaM kShemakaraM nR^INAM medhAjananamuttamam ||2-109-106
This hymn always provides prosperity. It is heavenly, holy, providing progeny and auspicious. This provides good fortune, prosperity. Providing the benefits of penance, this is best for men.
sarvarogaprashamanaM svakIrtikulavardhanam |
This hymn cures all diseases and it increases the fame of self and the race.
shraddadhAno dayopeto yaH paThedAtmavAnnaraH |
sarvapApavishuddhAtmA labhate cha shubhAM gatim ||2-109-107
If a kind hearted person recites this hymn with attention, his soul will be purified of all sins. He will attain an auspicious world.
