bhUya evaM dvijashreShThA yadusiMhasya dhImataH |
karmANyaparimeyANi shrotumichChAmi tattvataH ||2-115-1
janamejaya said:
O the best among the twice-born (vaishampAyana)! I wish to hear again
about the immeasurable deeds of the lion of the yAdava race (kR^iShNa),
the one with intellect, in real state.
shruyante vividhAni sma adbhutAni mahAdyuteH |
asaMkhyeyAni divyAni prakR^itAnyapi sarvashaH ||2-115-2
I hear that the one with great splendor has performed all kinds of various
innumerable divine wonders.
yAnyahaM vividhAnyasya shrutvA prIye mahAmune |
prabrUyAH sarvashastAta tAni me shR^iNvato.anagha ||2-115-3
O great sage! I enjoy hearing those various deeds. O lord! O the one without
any sin! Tell me about all the deeds. I shall hear them with attention.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
bahUnyAshcharyabhUtAni keshavasya mahAtmanaH |
kathitAni mahAbAho nAntaM shakyaM hi karmaNAm ||2-115-4
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) I have described many wonderful deeds of the great soul,
keshava (kR^iShNa). O the one with powerful arms! I am unable to describe
all those wonderful deeds completely.
gantuM hi bharatashreShTha vistareNa samantataH |
AvashyaM hi mayA vAchyaM leshamAtreNa bhArata ||2-115-5
O the best among the bharatas! It is not possible to describe the deeds in
detail. O the one of bharata race! I shall briefly provide the necessary
description of the deeds.
viShNoramitavIryasya prathitodArakarmaNaH |
AnupUrvyA pravakShyAmi shr^iNushvaikamanA nR^ipa ||2-115-6
I shall describe the deeds of the immeasurably valiant viShNu, the one who
performs kind deeds, in sequence, O king! Hear them with focused mind.
dvAravatyAM nivasatA yadusiMhena dhImatA |
rAShTrANi nR^ipamukhyAnAM kShobhitAni mahAtmanAm ||2-115-7
The one with intellect, the lion of the yAdava race, living in the city of
doors (dvAraka) agitated the kingdoms of the great souls of the enemy kings.
yadUnAmantaraprepsurvichakro dAnavo hataH |
puraM prAgjyotiShaM gatvA punastena mahAtmanA ||2-115-8
kR^iShNa killed the demon vichakra who was promoting the internal strife
of yAdava-s. The great soul, kR^iShNa went to the city of prAgjyotiSha
samudramadhye duShTAtmA narako dAnavo hataH |
vAsavaM cha raNe jitvA pArijAto hR^ito balAt ||2-115-9
and killed the wicked soul , demon naraka, in the middle of oceans. The
great soul kR^iShNa conquered vAsava (indra) in battle and took away the
pArijAta tree, forcefully.
varuNashchaiva bhagavAnnirjito lohite hrade |
dantavaktrashcha kArUSho nihato dakShiNApathe ||2-115-10
At the pool of lohita, the lord (kr^iShNa) conquered varuNa as well. On the
southern path, he killed the kAruSha king, dantavaktra.
shishupAlashcha saMpUrNe kilbiShaikashate hataH |
gatvA cha shoNitapuram sha~NkareNAbhirakShitaH ||2-115-11
On the completion of one hundred offences by shishupAla, kR^iShNa killed him.
He went to the city of shoNita, protected by shiva
baleH suto mahAvIryo bANo bAhusahasrabhR^it |
mahAmR^idhe mahArAja jitvA jIvanvisarjitaH ||2-115-12
and O great king! kR^iShNa conquered the son of bali, the great valiant bANa
having thousands of arms in a great battle and set him free, alive.
nirjitaH pAvakashchaiva girimadhye mahAtmanA |
shAlvashcha vijitaH sa~Nkhye saubhashcha vinipAtitaH ||2-115-13
The great soul (kR^iShNa) defeated the fire god among the mountains. He
conquered shAlva in the battle and made his vehicle, the great saubha, fall.
vikShobhya sAgaraM chaiva pA~nchajanyo vashIkR^itaH |
hayagrIvashcha nihato nR^ipAshchAnye mahAbalAH ||2-115-14
He agitated the ocean as well, killed pa~nchajana and took possession of the
conch pA~nchajanya. hayagrIva was killed along with other powerful kings.
jarAsandhasya nidhane mokShitAH sarvapArthivAH |
rathena jitvA nR^ipatIngAndhAratanayA hR^itA ||2-115-15
When jarAsandha was killed, he released all the kings. With only one chariot,
he conquered the kings and took away the daughter of gAndhAra king.
bhraShTarAjyAshcha shokArtAH pANDavAH parirakShitAH |
dAhitaM cha vanaM ghoraM puruhUtasya khANDavam ||2-115-16
He protected the sons of pANDu who were worried with sorrow, after they were
expelled from their kingdom. He caused the burning of the terrible forest,
khANDava of puruhUta (indra).
gANDIvaM chAgninA dattamarjunAyopapAditam |
dautyaM cha tatkR^itaM ghore vigrahe janamejaya ||2-115-17
He set aside the bow gANDIva given by the fire god for arjuna. O janamejaya!
He performed the role of a messenger in the terrible battle.
anena yadumukhyena yaduvaMsho vivardhitaH |
kuntyAshcha pramukhe proktA pratij~nA pANDavAnprati ||2-115-18
The chief of the yAdava-s, kR^iShNa, flourished the race of yAdava-s.
He took a pledge on the pANDava-s in front of kunti:
nivR^itte bhArate yuddhe pratidAsyAmi tatsutAn |
mokShitashcha mahAtejA nR^igaH shApAtsudAruNAt ||2-115-19
"I shall save your sons in the battle of bhArata". He released king nR^iga
of high splendor from a terrible curse.
yavanashcha hataH sa~Nkhye kAla ityabhivishrutaH |
vAnarau cha mahAvIryau maindo dvivida eva cha ||2-115-20
In the battle, he caused the death of the one widely known as kAlayavana.
He also conquered the greatly valiant monkeys, mainda and vivida in battle.
vijitau yudhi durdharShau jAmbavAMshcha parAjitaH |
He conquered jAmbhavat, who is difficult to defeat, in battle.
sAndIpanestathA putrastava chaiva pitA tathA ||2-115-21
gatau vaivasvatavashaM jIvitau tasya tejasA |
The son of sAndIpani as well as your father, who had gone to the side of
vaivasvata (the god of death) became alive due to the splendor of kR^iShNa.
sa~NgrAmA bahavaH prAptA ghorA naravarakShayAH ||2-115-22
He fought many battles resulting in the death of terrible kings.
nihatAshcha nR^ipAH sarve kR^itvA tajjayamadbhutam |
janamejayAsya yuddheShu yathA te varNitA mayA ||2-115-23
O janamejaya! I have described how kR^iShNa killed the terrible kings and
achieved wonderful victories in the battles.
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe viShNuparvaNi
vAsudevamAhAtmye pa~nchadashAdhikashatatamo.adhyAyaH
Thus this is the one hundred and fifteenth chapter of viShNuparva,
