vaishampAyana uvAcha
athAhuko mahAbAhuH kR^iShNaM prAha mahAdyutiH |
harShAdutphullanayanaH shrUyatAm yadunandana ||2-128-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya!) King Ahuka having powerful arms, with his eyes wide open due
to happiness, told kR^iShNa with high splendor: O the son of yadu!
Please hear.
evaM gate.aniruddhasya kriyatAM mahadutsavaH |
kShemAtpratyAgataM dR^iShTvA sevyamAnAH sahAsate ||2-128-2
We have seen that aniruddha, who was taken away has returned safely
(to the city of doors (dvAraka)). He is being attended properly. Hence
please conduct a great festival for aniruddha.
uShApi cha mahAbhAgA sakhIbhiH parivAritA |
ramate parayA prItyA chAniruddhena sa~NgatA ||2-128-3
O the highly fortunate one (kR^iShNa)! uShA, surrounded by her friends,
also is enjoying the most, along with aniruddha with pleasure.
kumbhANDaduhitA rAmA uShAyAH sakhimaNDale |
praveshyatAM mahAbhAgA vaidarbhIM vardhayatyuta ||2-128-4
O highly fortunate one! In the assembly of friends of uShA, let rAmA,
the daughter of kumbhANDa be included. Let the daughter of the king of
vidarbha prosper.
sAmbAya dIyatAM rAmA kumbhANDaduhitA shubhA |
sheShAshcha kanyA nyasyantAM kumArANAM yathAkramam ||2-128-5
Let sAmba be given the daughter of kumbhANDa, rAmA. Let other maidens be
given to the other youngsters as per their order.
vartate sotsavastatra aniruddhasya veshmani |
gR^ihe shrIdhanvanashchaiva shubhastatra pravartate ||2-128-6
The festival was organized at the house of aniruddha. An auspicious festival
was organized at the house of shrIdhanva also.
vAdayanti pure tatra nAryo madavashaM gatAH |
nR^ityante chApsarAstatra gAyanti cha tathAparAH ||2-128-7
The women, becoming highly excited, played musical instruments. The divine
women danced. Others sang there.
kAshchitpramuditAstatra kAshchidanyonyamabruvan |
nAnAvarNAmbaradharAH krIDamAnAstatastataH ||2-128-8
Some others enjoyed there. Others spoke to each other. Wearing dresses of
different colours, they played all over the place.
abhiyAMti tato.anyonyaM kAshchinmadavashAtsvayam |
krIDanti kAshchidakShaistu harShAdutphullalochanAH ||2-128-9

Some confronted each other. Some others became highly excited. Some, with
their eyes wide open with wonder, played with dice.
mAyUraM rathamAruhya sakhIbhiH parivAritA |
uShA saMpreShitA devyA rudrANyA pratigR^ihyatAm ||2-128-10
(kR^iShNa told rukmiNI:) Mounting on the peacock chariot, surrounded by her
friends, uShA was sent by goddess rudrANI (pArvatI). Let her be accepted.
iyaM chaiva kulashlAghyA nAmnoShA sundarI varA |
bANaputrI tavavadhUH pratigR^ihNIShva bhAminIm ||2-128-11
She is uShA by name, praised by her race, the best among beautiful women,
the daughter of bANa, your daughter in law. O beautiful woman! Accept her.
tataH pratigR^ihItA sA strIbhirAchArama~NgalaiH |
praveshitA cha sA veshma aniruddhasya shobhanA ||2-128-12
(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) The women received her with
auspicious rituals. The sparkling woman was made to enter the house of
aniruddha.
devakI rohiNI chaiva rukmiNyatha vidarbhajA |
dR^iShTvAniruddhaM rodantyaH snehaharShasamanvitAH ||2-128-13
devakI, rohiNI and also rukmiNI, born in the land of vidarbha, seeing
aniruddha, wept due to love and happiness.
revatI rukmiNI chaiva gR^ihamukhyaM praveshayat |
vadhUrvardhasi diShTyA tvamaniruddhasya darshanAt ||2-128-14
revatI and rukmiNI made uShA enter the main house and said: O bride! You
augment the fortune by making us see aniruddha.
tatastUryapraNAdaistA varanAryaH shubhAnanAH |
kriyAmArebhire kartumuShA cha gR^ihasaMsthitA ||2-128-15
Then accompanied by the sound of tUrya, the best among women having
auspicious faces began the rituals as uShA sat in the house.
tato harmyatalasthA sA vR^iShNipu~NgavasaMsthitA |
ramate sarvasadR^ishairupabhogairvarAnanA ||2-128-16
Then she entered the beautiful residence along with the prominent men
among the vR^iShNi-s. The one with the best face enjoyed with all enjoyable
items.
chitralekhA cha sushroNI apsarArUpadhAriNI |
ApR^ichchya cha sakhIvargamuShAM cha tridivaM gatA ||2-128-17
ChitralekhA with beautiful waist, in the form of a divine woman, after
bidding farewell to uShA and her friends, went to heaven.
gatAsu tAsu sarvAsu sakhIShvasurasundarI |
mAyAvatyA gR^ihaM nItA prathamaM sA nimantritA ||2-128-18
When all those friends left, the beautiful demon princess was taken to the
residence of mAyAvatI, where she was invited before.
sA tu pradyumnagR^ihiNI snuShAM dR^iShTvA sumadhyamA |
vAsobhirannapAnaishcha pUjayAmAsa sundarIm ||2-128-19
The wife of pradyumna (mAyAvatI) with a beautiful waist, seeing her
daughter in law, honoured the beautiful woman with clothes, drinks and
eatables.
tataH krameNa sarvAstA vadhUmUShAM yadustriyaH |
AchAramanupashyantyaH svadharmamupachakrire ||2-128-20
Then all the yAdava women honoured the bride uShA in order along with rituals
as per their race and conduct.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
etatte sarvamAkhyAtaM mayA kurukulodvaha |
yathA bANo jitaH sa~Nkhye jIvanmuktashcha viShNunA ||2-128-21
vaishampAyana said:
O the one who flourishes the kuru race (O janamejaya)! I have told you all
these, how viShNu (kR^iShNa) conquered bANa in battle and how bANa was
released alive.
dvArakAyAM tataH kR^iShNo reme yadugaNairvR^itaH |
anvashAsanmahIM kR^itsnAM parayA saMyuto mudA ||2-128-22
Then kR^iShNa enjoyed in the city of doors (dvAraka) surrounded by yAdava-s.
kR^iShNa ruled the earth happily.
evameSho.avatIrNo vai pR^ithivIM pR^ithivIpate |
viShNuryadukulashreShTho vAsudeveti vishrutaH ||2-128-23
O the lord of earth (O janamejaya!) viShNu (kR^iShNa) the best among the race
of yadu, famous as the son of vasudeva, was born on the face of earth.
etaishcha kAraNaiH shrImAnvasudevakule prabhuH |
jAto vR^iShNiShu devakyAM yanmAM tvaM paripR^ichChasi ||2-128-24
This is the reason why the auspicious lord was born to devakI, among
vR^iShNi-s, in the race of vasudeva. You had asked me about this.
nivR^itte nAradaprashne yanmayoktaM samAsataH |
shrutAste vistarAH sarve ye pUrvaM janamejaya ||2-128-25
O janamejaya! In the context of nArada's question, all that I told you in
brief, I have told you in detail.

viShNostu mAthure kalpe yatra te saMshayo mahAn |
vAsudevagatishchaiva sA mayA samudAhR^itA ||2-128-26
I have also explained your doubt regarding the stay of viShNu (kR^iShNa)
in mathura and also about the life of the son of vasudeva (kR^iShNa).

AshcharyaM chaiva nAnyadvai kR^iShNashchAshcharyasaMnidhiH |
sarveShvAshcharyakalpeShu nAstyAshcharyamavaiShNavam ||2-128-27
Nothing else is wonderful. kR^iShNa is the source of wonder. Among all the
wonderful things, viShNu (kR^iShNa) is the most wonderful.
eSha dhanyo hi dhanyAnAM dhanyakR^iddhanyabhAvanaH |
deveShu tu sadaityeShu nAsti dhanyataro.achyutAt ||2-128-28
Among the fortunate, he is the most fortunate. He is the creator of fortune.
He is the welfare of fortune. There is no one more fortunate than the one
who does not have any fall (achyuta).
AdityA vasavo rudrA ashvinau marutastathA |
gaganaM bhUrdishashchaiva salilaM jyotireva cha ||2-128-29
He is Aditya, vasu, rudra, both the ashvin-s, as also marut-s. He is the
sky, earth, all directions as also water and light.
eSha dhAtA vidhAtA cha saMhartA chaiva nityashaH |
satyaM dharmastapashchaiva brahmA chaiva pitAmahaH ||2-128-30
He is the eternal creator, the maintainer and the destroyer. He is the truth,
dharma and penance. He is brahma and the great grandfather.
anantashchaiva nAgAnAM rudrANAM sha~NkaraH smR^itaH |
ja~NgamAja~NgamaM chaiva jagannArAyaNodbhavam ||2-128-31
Among serpents, he is ananta (the one without an end). He is remembered as
sha~Nkara (shiva) among rudra-s. All that is there in the fixed as well as
the moving world have originated from nArAyaNa.

etasmAchcha jagatsarvaM prasUyeta janArdanAt |
jagachcha sarvaM deveshe taM namaskuru bhArata ||2-128-32
All the world is born from the one who excites men (viShNu). All the world
is in the lord of gods (viShNu). O the one of bhArata race (janamejaya)!
Bow to him.
pUjyashcha satataM sarvairdevaireSha sanAtanaH |
The eternal lord is always to be worshipped by all gods.
ityuktaM bANayuddhaM te mAhAtmyaM keshavasya tu ||2-128-33
vaMshapratiShThAmatulAM shravaNAdeva lapsyase |
Thus I have described the battle with bANa, proclaiming the greatness of
kesahava (kR^ShNa). Hearing this alone will ensure permanent glory to
your race.
ye chedaM dhArayiShyanti bANayuddhamanuttamam ||2-128-34
keshavasya cha mAhAtmyaM nAdharmastAnbhaviShyati |
Deviation from right conduct will never occur to those who hear the
incomparable battle with bANa as also the greatness of keshava (kR^iShNa).
eShA tu vaiShNAvI charyA mayA kArtsnyena kIrtitA ||2-128-35
pR^ichChatastAta yaj~ne.asminnivR^itte janamejaya |
Thus as this sacrifice is reaching its conclusion, O janamejaya! I have told
you completely about the practice of vaiShNavI.
Ashcharyaparva nikhilaM yo hIdaM dhArayennR^ipa ||2-128-36
sarvapApavinirmukto viShNulokaM sa gachChati |
O king! If this text of wonder is understood in full, one will become
released from all sins and go to the world of viShNu.
kalya utthAya yo nityaM kIrtayetsusamAhitaH ||2-128-37
na tasya durlabhaM kiMchidiha loke paratra cha |
For the one who one recites this daily, getting up early in the morning,
there is nothing difficult to obtain in this world and the other world.
brAhmaNaH sarvavedI syAtkShatriyo vijayI bhavet ||22-128-38
vaishyo dhanasamR^iddhaH syAchChUdraH kAmAnavApnuyAt |
The Brahmin will become an expert of all veda-s. The kShatriya will be
victorious. The trader will become wealthy. The shUdra will get all that he
desires.
nAshubham prApnuyAtki~nchiddIrghamAyurlabheta saH ||2-128-39
Nothing inauspicious will ever occur to him. He will have a long life.
sautiruvAcha
iti pArikShito rAjA vaishampAyanabhAShitam |
shrutavAnachalo bhUtva harivaMshaM dvijottamAH ||2-128-40
sauti said:
O the best among the twice born! Thus the king janamejaya, son of parikShit,
heard harivaMsha, as told by vaishampAyana, with firm attention.
evaM shaunaka sa~NkShepAdvistareNa tathaiva cha |
proktA vai sarvavaMshAste kiM bhUyaH shrotumichChasi ||2-128-41
O shaunaka! I have told you all about the races in short as well as in
detail. Now what do you want to hear again?
iti shrImahAbhArate khileShu harivaMshe viShNuparvaNi
uShAharaNasamAptau aShTAviMshatyadhikashatatamo.adhyAyaH
Thus this is the one hundred and twenty eighth chapter of viShNuparva,
harivaMsha, khila of mahAbhArata, aniruddha marries uShA.
samAptamidaM viShNuparva
Thus ends viShNuparva
