vaishampAyana uvAcha
evaM kathayamAnaM taM shAlvarAjaM nR^ipAj~nayA |
uvAcha paramaprIto yavanAdhipatirnR^ipaH ||2-54-1
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya !) To the king shAlva, who was speaking as ordered by the
kings, the king, lord of yavana, who was highly pleased, said:
kAlayavana uvAcha
dhanyo.asmyanugR^ihIto.asmi saphalaM jIvitaM mama |
kR^iShNanigrahahetoryanniyukto bahubhirnR^ipaiH ||2-54-2
kAlayavana said:
I am fulfilled and blessed. My life has become fruitful, since many kings
have directed me to kill kR^iShNa.
durjayastriShu lokeShu surAsuragaNairapi |
tasya nigrahahetormAmavadhArya jayAshiSham ||2-54-3
He cannot be conquered in the three worlds, even by the groups of deva-s
and daitya-s. The kings have wished me victory for killing him.
prahR^iShTai rAjasimhaistairavadhAryo jayo mama |
teShAM vAchAmbuvarSheNa vijayo me bhaviShyati ||2-54-4
The lion-like kings are happy. They foresee my victory. With the shower of
the water of their words, I shall achieve victory.
kariShye vachanaM teShAM nR^ipasattamachoditam |
parAjayo.api rAjendra jayena sadR^isho mama ||2-54-5
I will do as per their words, as prompted by the best of the kings. O indra
of kings (king shAlva)! Even defeat will be like victory to me.
adyaiva tithinakShatraM muhUrtaM karaNaM shubham |
yAsyAmi mathurAM rAjanvijetuM keshavaM raNe ||2-54-6
O king! Today itself, when the hour, star and the moment are auspicious,
I shall proceed to mathurA to conquer keshava (kR^iShNa) in battle.
vaishampAyana uvAcha
evamAbhAShya rAjAnaM saubhasya patimUrjitam |
satkR^itya cha yathAnyAyaM mahArhamaNibhUShaNaiH ||2-54-7
vaishampAyana said:
(O janamejaya !) Speaking thus to the energetic lord of saubha (shAlva),
the king (kAlayavana) honoured him (king shAlva) as required with great
ornaments.
brAhmaNebhyo dadau vittaM siddhAdeshAya vai nR^ipaH |
purohitAya rAjendra pradadau bahusho dhanam ||2-54-8
The king presented wealth to the brAhmaNa-s.
O indra of kings (king janamejaya !) (vaishampAyana said :)
Towards obtaining blessings for success, the king
gave lots of wealth to the priests (also).
hutvAgniM vidhivadrAjA kR^itakautukama~NgalaH |
prasthAnaM kR^itavAnsaMyagjetukAmo janArdanam ||2-54-9
The king offered oblation to the sacred fire as required, performed
auspicious deeds and proceeded as required to conquer janArdana (kR^iShNa).
shAlvo.api bharatashreShTha kR^itArtho hR^iShTamAnasaH |
yavanendraM pariShvajya jagAma svapuraM nR^ipaH ||2-54-10
O the best of bharata race (janamejaya !) (vaishampAyana said :) King
shAlva was also satisfied (that his errand was successful). With a happy
mind, the king embraced the king of yavana and returned to his city.
