Chapter 107 - shambara eliminated

shambarastu tataH kruddho mudgaraM taM samAdade |
mudgare gR^ihyamANe tu dvAdashArkAH samutthitAH ||2-107-1

(O janamejaya!) Then angry shambara took up the hammer. As he took up the hammer, twelve suns rose up in the sky (the brightness of the weapon was equal to that of twelve suns).

parvatAshchalitAH sarve tathaiva vasudhAtalam |
unmArgAH sAgarA yAtAH sa~NkShubdhAshchapi devatAH ||2-107-2

All the mountains as well as the earth shook. All the oceans overflowed. The gods became agitated.

gR^idhrachakrAkulaM vyoma ulkApAto babhUva ha |
vavarSha rudhiraM devaH paruShaM pavano vavau ||2-107-3

Vultures circled in the sky. Many meteors fell. The gods showered blood. The wind blew harsh.

evaM dR^iShTvA mahotpAtAnpradyumnaH sa tvarAnvitaH |
avatIrya rathAdvIraH kR^itA~njalipuTaH sthitaH ||2-107-4

Seeing the terrible fall of meteors, the valiant pradyumna left the chariot and stood folding his hands.

devIM sasmAra manasA pArvatIM sha~NkarapriyAm |
praNamya shirasA devIM stotum samupachakrame ||2-107-5

He remembered the Goddess pArvatI, dear to sha~Nkara (shiva), in his mind. He bowed to the Goddess with his head and began to praise her.

OM namaH kAtyAyanyai girIshAyai namo namaH |
namastrailokyamAyAyai kAtyAyanyai namo namH ||2-107-6

I pay obeisance to kAtyAyani, Goddess of the mountains. I pay obeisance to the creator of illusions in the three worlds. O kAtyAyanI! I pay obeisance to thee.

namaH shatruavinAshinyai namo gauryai shivapriye |
namasye shumbhamathanIM nishumbhamathanImapi ||2-107-7

I pay obeisance to the destroyer of enemies, gaurI, dear to shiva, the one who oppressed shumbha as well as the one who destroyed nishumbha.

kAlarAtri namastubhyaM kaumAryai cha namo namaH |
kAntAravAsinIM devIM namasyAmi kR^itA~njaliH ||2-107-8

O Goddess of the Dark Night (at the time of praLaya)! I pay obeisance to you! O kaumArI! I pay obeisance to you! O the one who dwellss in the forest! O Goddess! I pay obeisance to you with folded hands.

vindhyavAsinIM durgaghnAM raNadurgAM raNapriyAm |
namasyAmi mahAdevIM jayAM cha vijayAM tathA ||2-107-9

I pay obeisance to the Goddess who lives in the vindhya, Goddess who destroys dangers, raNadurgA who likes to battle. O great Goddess! O jayA! O vijayA! I pay obeisance to thee.

aparAjitAM namasye.ahamajitAM shatrunAshinIm |
ghaNTAhastAM namasyAmi ghaNTAmAlAkulAM tathA || 2-107-10

I pay obeisance to the one who is never defeated, the one who cannot be conquered, the one who destroys the enemies, the one who has a bell in her hand, and the one who has a garland of bells.

trishUlinIM namasyAmi mahiShAsuraghAtinIm |
siMhAnanAM namasyAmi siMhapravaraketanAm ||2-107-11

I pay obeisance to the one who holds a three pointed spear, the one who killed the demon mahiSha, I pay obeisance to the one with lion's face and the one who has lion on her flag.

ekAnaMshAM namasyAmi gAyatrIm yaj~nasatkR^itAm |
sAvitrIM chApi viprANAM namasye.ahaM kR^itA~njaliH ||2-107-12

I pay obeisance to ekAnaMshA, gAyatrI, the one who is facilitated in sacrifices, sAvitrI of the brAhmins with folded hands.

iti kAmavachastuShTA durgA saMprItamAnasA ||2-107-13
uvAcha vachanaM devI suprItenAntarAtmanA |

(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) The Goddess durgA was pleased with these words of kAma (pradyumna). With a pleased mind and pleased in her soul, the Goddess spoke the following words:

pashya pashya mahAbAho rukmiNyAnandavardhana ||2-107-14
varaM varaya vatsa tvamamoghaM darshanaM mama |

O the one with powerful arms! Look at me! O the one who increases the happiness of rukmiNI! O son! Accept a boon from me! Seeing me is unfailing (productive).

devyAsu vachanam shrutvA romA~nchodgatamAnasaH ||2-107-15
praNamya shirasA devIM vij~naptumupachakrame |

(vaishampAyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words of the Goddess, pradyumna was thrilled. He bowed to the Goddess with his head and went on to inform her:

yadi tvaM devi tuShTAsi dIyatAM me yadIpsitam ||2-107-16
varaM cha varade yAche sarvAmitreShu me jayaH |

(pardyumna said) O Goddess! If you are pleased with me and if you can fulfill my wish, O the one who give boon, I seek the boon of victory against all my enemies.

yastvayA mudgaro dattaH shambarasyAtmasaMbhavaH ||2-107-17
eSha me gAtramAsAdya mAlA padmavatI bhavet |

If the hammer born from you and given to shambara strikes my body, it shall become a garland of lotus.

(vashampAyana continued) The Goddess said: Let it be so and disappeared there.

mudgaraM taM gR^ihItvA cha shambaraH krodhamUrchChitaH ||2-107-19
bhrAmayitvA sa chikShepa pradyumnorasi vIryavAn |

shambara who was charged with anger took up the hammer. Spinning the weapon, the valiant shambara threw it at the chest of pradyumna.

sa gatvA madanAbhyAshaM mAlA bhUtvA tu pauShkarI ||2-107-20
pradyumnasya cha kaNThe tu samAsaktA vyarAjata |
nakShatrANAM tu mAlAyAM yathA parivR^ito vidhuH ||2-107-21

That reached madana (pradyumna) and became a garland of lotus flowers. It sparkled, adorning the neck of pradyumna, shining like the moon surrounded by a garland of stars.

tato devAH sagandharvAH siddhAshcha paramarShayaH |
sAdhu sAdhviti vAchochuH pUjayankeshavAtmajam ||2-107-22
mudgaraM puShpabhUtaM tu dR^iShTvA pradyumnasaMnidhau |

Then all the deva-s, gandharva-s, siddha-s as well as great sages said: Well done and honoured the son of keshava (pradyumna), seeing the hammer becoming a garland of flowers on the body of pradyumna.

vaiShNavaM paramAstraM tu nAradena yathAhR^itam ||2-107-23
saMdadhe chApamAnamya idaM vachanamabravIt |

Fixing the highly powerful weapon of vaiShNava provided by nArada on his bow, pradyumna spoke the following words:

yadyahaM rukmiNIputraH keshavasyAtmajo hyaham ||2-107-24
tena satyena bANena jahi tvaM shambaraM raNe |

(pradyumna said :) If I am the son of rukmiNI and the son of keshava (kR^iShNa), O weapon! Kill shambara in the battle.

ityuktvA chApamAkR^iShya sandhAya cha mahAmanAH ||2-107-25
chikShepa shambarasyAtha daha.NllokatrayaM yathA |

(vaishampAyana continued) Saying this, the one having great soul (pradyumna) pulled the bow string and shot the weapon at shambara as if all the three worlds will burn.

sa kShipto vR^iShNisiMhena sharaH kravyAdamohanaH ||2-107-26
hR^idyaM shambarasyAtha bhittvA dharaNimAgataH |

The arrow shot thus by the lion of vR^iShNi-s (pradyumna), tempting the flesh, split the heart of shambara and entered the earth.

na chAsya mAMsaM na snAyurnAsthi na tva~N na shoNitam ||2-107-27
sarvaM tadbhasmasAdbhUtaM vaiShNavAstrasya tejasA |

His flesh, muscles, nerves, bones, skin or blood did not remain. Everything was reduced to ashes by the splendor of the vaiShNava weapon.

hate daitye mahAkAye dAnave shambare.adhame ||2-107-28
jahR^iShurdevagandharvA nanR^itushchApsarogaNAH |

As the demon having huge body, the lowly demon shambara was killed, the deva-s and gandharva-s were overjoyed. The groups of divine women danced.

urvashI menakA rambhA viprachittistilottamA ||2-107-29
nanR^iturhR^iShTamanaso jagatsthAvaraja~Ngamam |

urvashI, menakA, rambhA, viprachitti, tilottamA as well as all the fixed and moving beings of the entire world danced with happy minds.

devarAjastu suprItaH sarvadevagaNaiH saha |
pradyumnaM puShpavarSheNa tamabhyarchya prahR^iShTavat || 2-107-30

The king of deva-s (indra) along with all deva-s became highly pleased. They greeted pradyumna by showering flowers happily.

atha samarahate tu daityarAje
madhumathanasya sutena vaiShNavAstraiH |
vigataripubhayAH surAshcha jagmu-
rmakaravibhUShaNaketanaM stuvantaH ||2-107-31

As the son (pradyumna) of the oppressor of madhu (kR^iShNa) killed the king of demons with the weapon of vaiShNava in the battle, the deva-s went away, devoid of the fear of enemies, praising the one having the sign of fish on his flag (pradyumna).

sa cha samaraparishramam vahanvai
nagaramukhaM pravivesha raukmiNeyaH |
priyatama iva kAntayA prahR^iShTa-
stvaritapadaM ratidarshanaM chakAra ||2-107-32

The son of rukmiNI, having borne the effort in the war, entered the city. The one who enjoys with his dear, pradyumna, then happily saw rati (his wife).

Thus this is the one hundred and seventh chapter of viShNuparva, harivamsha, khila of mahAbhArata, shambara eliminated.
